Renters settling in Guindalera face major crowd surges around the arena during the bullfighting season, trading quiet residential streets for heavy event foot traffic on performance days.
The arena stands in the Guindalera quarter of the Salamanca district. It was designed by architect José Espeliú to replace the older Fuente del Berro facility after matador Joselito argued for a larger civic venue. The Jardón family provided the plot to the provincial council in exchange for several decades of operational rights.
Bullfighting halted during the Spanish Civil War, when authorities repurposed the structure as a detention facility and concentration camp. Regular events resumed following the end of the conflict. The arena inspired musical works, including a dedicated pasodoble by Maestro Manuel Lillo, and continues active seasonal operations.
