About the place

Standing across the rail corridor, the cable-stayed span creates a direct passage between the central cultural and commercial quarters.

Urban designers Steve Thorne and Gordon Gibson proposed the structure during a study aimed at revitalising the core of Johannesburg. They designated the project after Nelson Mandela to honour his work in bringing South African society together. The structure was conceived as a physical expression of unity, creating an essential route to link the commercial hub of Braamfontein directly with the cultural precinct of Newtown.

The crossing spans the extensive railway lines and sidings positioned west of Johannesburg Park Station, alongside older crossings such as the Johan Rissik Bridge. Built to modernise inner-city infrastructure, the cable-supported span long held the record as the longest crossing of its kind in Southern Africa until the completion of the Msikaba Bridge. Commuters rely on this thoroughfare for daily pedestrian and vehicular transit.
