About the place

Moscow Zoo operates as an expansive zoological research park divided across two historical territories in the city centre.

University biologists established the institution as a dedicated scientific garden, which later passed into municipal administration under city authorities. The grounds rank among the oldest zoological collections in Europe. A footbridge links the original sector to the subsequent expansion parcel across an urban roadway, allowing visitors to navigate between both halves of the complex without exiting to city streets.

A reconstructed entrance resembles a massive stone fortress, marking the primary threshold into the enclosures. Inside, the grounds contain specialized marine environments with sea lions, an aviary, and nocturnal wildlife displays alongside indoor aquariums. Decades of institutional history include communal rearing projects, where naturalists raised mixed litters of young animals together on a dedicated platform.
