About the place

Mayakovskaya represents an architectural shift in deep underground station design.

Engineers built Mayakovskaya on the Zamoskvoretskaya Line in Tverskoy District by replacing heavy pylon structures with a continuous vaulted ceiling supported by colonnades. This structural method introduced the deep column station model to underground rapid transit. Designer Alexey Dushkin won the Grand Prize at the New York World's Fair, where the Soviet Pavilion showcased a full-scale replica of the platform hall.

During wartime air raids, the station functioned as an underground public shelter. Joseph Stalin maintained a temporary residence within the station and addressed an assembly of party officials and local residents gathered in the central hall on the anniversary of the October Revolution. Commuters now walk through these vaulted colonnades daily, relying on frequent train arrivals to traverse the central district.
