Sobre o local

The Singer Building established Lower Manhattan as a testing ground for corporate skyscraper design.

The Singer Manufacturing Company erected its headquarters at the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street for its sewing enterprise. Commissioned by Frederick Gilbert Bourne and planned by Ernest Flagg, the tower blended French Second Empire forms with Beaux-Arts detailing. Local regulations had earlier delayed metal skeleton framing, but updated structural practices enabled bold corporate construction.

Site preparation encountered sudden disruption when a broken water main flooded the foundation pit. Flagg organized the interior for commercial utility, placing banking rooms below rental office floors and corporate suites. Continued land purchases along Liberty Street added the Bourne Building annex, drawing long-term industrial tenants such as Babcock and Wilcox alongside prominent attorneys and trust firms.
