Workers erected the station over a marsh known as Ciganska bara or Bara Venecija, where residents previously crafted tiles from mud and inhabited stilt dwellings. Draining the wetland required immense volumes of earth excavated from the Prokop cutting alongside debris from the demolished Stambol Gate. The project also introduced a Sava river rail bridge that linked the domestic rail network across the frontier toward Zemun.

Early rail plans faced severe domestic resistance, with legislative opponents denouncing the costly tracks as destructive before approval passed.
