Residents crossing the Piazzetta beside the palace learn to route morning errands around lagoon high tides and plaza tour groups.
Government authority shifted from the island of Malamocco to the Rialto area, establishing a ducal stronghold that grew through successive reconstructions. Doge Sebastiano Ziani reorganized Saint Mark's Square and built defensive facades using Istrian stone foundations and herringbone brick paving. Subsequent expansions accommodated the growing Great Council, producing the exterior arcades and open loggias along the Piazzetta.
Repeated fires prompted major renovations, including Antonio Rizzo's canal wing and the enclosed Bridge of Sighs leading toward the detention cells. When flames gutted the Great Council Chamber, Venetian authorities rejected Andrea Palladio's neoclassical designs in order to preserve the Gothic profile. The site combined the head of state's residence with supreme courts and administrative assemblies under a unified roof.
Following the collapse of the republic, foreign administrations repurposed the halls for regional offices and library storage. Deterioration spurred nationwide restoration programs that cleared out municipal bureaucracy while preserving the State Office for the Protection of Historical Monuments on the loggia floor. The property now operates as a public museum managed by Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
