Commuters cross between Camden and Center City on foot, by bike, or aboard rapid rail tracks running directly alongside vehicle traffic.
The Delaware River Port Authority maintains and operates this monumental suspension crossing between Philadelphia and Camden. Originally named the Delaware River Bridge, the structure integrates Interstate six hundred seventy-six and United States Route thirty alongside transit tracks and a public walkway for cyclists and pedestrians.
Engineered by Ralph Modjeski and Leon Moisseiff with architecture overseen by Paul Philippe Cret, the structure held the record for the longest suspension span in the world when it opened. It functions alongside other regional river crossings including the Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross, and Tacony-Palmyra crossings to carry commuter flow.
Transit passengers use the PATCO Speedline to cross directly over the water between state borders. The path allows foot commuters to travel between downtown Philadelphia and the New Jersey waterfront without boarding a train or paying vehicular tolls, though traffic noise remains continuous alongside the open pedestrian deck.
