O miejscu

Tokugawa shoguns governed their western interests from Nijō Castle while the Imperial Court remained nearby.

Tokugawa Ieyasu mandated western feudal lords to construct the fortress as his official residence in Kyoto. The compound incorporated concentric fortification rings, the Ninomaru Palace, extensive gardens, and land taken from Shinsenen Garden to supply water for the ponds. Structural elements from dismantled Fushimi Castle, including the karamon gate and main tower, were brought here to reinforce the military seat.

Lightning destroyed the central keep, and subsequent citywide blazes leveled the inner ward before an imperial prince residence was transferred onto the grounds. Ninomaru Palace later hosted the formal declaration returning executive power from the shogunate to the Emperor. Workers stripped the Tokugawa hollyhock crests to install imperial chrysanthemums across the roofs, marking its transition into a detached imperial palace.

The imperial house transferred the entire property to Kyoto municipal authorities, opening the gates to regular visitors. Long-term residents in the surrounding ward observe frequent preservation work along the perimeter walls, where severe seasonal typhoons strip traditional exterior plaster through sustained exposure to wind and driving rain. Maintenance crews continually patch these ramparts to prevent structural decay.
