O miejscu

The red brick towers mark the urban boundary between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain.

The bridge originated at an old customs barrier where a spiked tree trunk was lowered into the water each night to block river smugglers. Architect Otto Stahn designed the permanent double-deck crossing in the North German Brick Gothic style, adding pointed arches, vaulted arcades, and decorative towers modeled on the historic gate in Prenzlau. The upper level carries the elevated railway while vehicles and pedestrians share the deck below.

Wartime demolition severed the central span before the structure spent decades dividing the American and Soviet sectors. During the Cold War, the crossing functioned as a strictly controlled checkpoint for pedestrians, forcing western subway trains to terminate at Schlesisches Tor. Restoring the link reconnected Friedrichshain with Kreuzberg, transforming a militarized partition into a continuous corridor for daily transit.
