About the place

Rembrandtplein is a historic public square that transitioned from a medieval gate into an urban market and entertainment hub.

The site originated along defensive walls built during the Middle Ages to guard the settlement. A gateway known as Regulierspoort stood here before urban expansion transformed the open ground into a dairy market named Botermarkt. The gate later housed a municipal weigh house, while autumn fairs brought circus tents. The square received its current name when Louis Royer's statue of Rembrandt moved to the centre.
