Tenants living beside the square trade quiet evenings for late crowds from surrounding cafés and entertainment venues.
The site originated along defensive walls built during the Middle Ages to guard the settlement. A gateway known as Regulierspoort stood here before urban expansion transformed the open ground into a dairy market named Botermarkt. The gate later housed a municipal weigh house, while autumn fairs brought circus tents. The square received its current name when Louis Royer's statue of Rembrandt moved to the centre.
Rembrandt van Rijn once owned a house nearby, giving the location its enduring name. The surrounding district later evolved into an active nightlife district that attracted artists, young people, and local laborers. Hotels, cafés, and entertainment venues opened across the adjoining streets to serve incoming patrons. Both residents and visitors continue to frequent the square for leisure and hospitality.
