Remote workers and residents rely on the hilltop promenade for daily decompression, stepping straight from crowded urban streets onto open fortress pathways.
The grounds originated as an open Ottoman military field separating the citadel from civilian quarters. Its name derives from Turkish terms for fortress and square. Urbanist Emilijan Josimovic reshaped the barren buffer zone by extending Knez Mihailova Street directly to the ramparts, planning the greenery as a municipal air reservoir. King Milan later directed the systematic levelling and forestation inspired by public parks in France.
Later developments added formal walkways alongside landmark structures like the Small Staircase by Jelisaveta Nacic and the Big Staircase by Aleksandar Krstic. For everyday residents, the area serves as a direct green extension of the central pedestrian district. The cliffside position above the river junction provides wide sightlines and cooler breezes, though exposed stone paths become slick and unshaded during intense summer heat.
