Kalemegdan Park forms the historic core above the river junction, functioning as a primary urban promenade and defensive fortress for centuries.
The grounds originated as an open Ottoman military field separating the citadel from civilian quarters. Its name derives from Turkish terms for fortress and square. Urbanist Emilijan Josimovic reshaped the barren buffer zone by extending Knez Mihailova Street directly to the ramparts, planning the greenery as a municipal air reservoir. King Milan later directed the systematic levelling and forestation inspired by public parks in France.

For everyday residents, the area serves as a direct green extension of the central pedestrian district.
