Patrons navigate schedules across both the historic auditorium and the adjacent New Stage, balancing sold-out main hall opera runs against contemporary productions next door.
Prince Peter Urusov and Michael Maddox established the performance company under an imperial licence from Empress Catherine. After repeated fires destroyed earlier timber and stone venues, Andrei Mikhailov submitted a proposal that proved too expensive to realize. Joseph Bové adapted the design to complete the primary edifice, which joined the network of Imperial Theatres alongside the nearby Maly Theatre.
Following the October Revolution, the house became the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre and survived an administrative push to shutter operations entirely. Serge Koussevitzky conducted early symphonic programmes, and managers added Beethoven Hall. Growth eventually prompted the New Stage annex on a neighbouring slope, linking rehearsal halls and artist quarters beside blocks of communal flats.
Engineers discovered severe structural degradation beneath the historic hall, prompting a federally financed overhaul. Artisans stripped away Soviet modifications to recover original acoustic qualities and imperial ornament while casts performed at the Great Kremlin Palace and the New Stage. The company resumed main-stage productions with the opera Ruslan and Lyudmila once subterranean reinforcements finished.
