Growth eventually prompted the New Stage annex on a neighbouring slope, linking rehearsal halls and artist quarters beside blocks of communal flats.

Engineers discovered severe structural degradation beneath the historic hall, prompting a federally financed overhaul. Artisans stripped away Soviet modifications to recover original acoustic qualities and imperial ornament while casts performed at the Great Kremlin Palace and the New Stage.
