Myōhō-ji anchors the quiet valley where Nichiren established his original retreat before later sectarian conflicts reshaped the surrounding hills.

The grounds in the Valley of Pine Needles mark the secluded area where Nichiren established his original forest shelter. Honkuku-ji initially occupied the location before relocating to Kyoto, leaving the property to be rebuilt by the priest Nichiei. As a son of Prince Morinaga and an uncle to Ashikaga Takauji, Nichiei dedicated the sanctuary to his father, cementing an enduring connection between the compound and the Imperial House.

Long-term residents exploring the valley find family graves directly tied to imperial history. Nichiei and his mother, Minami no Ōnkata, are buried on the property, while cenotaphs honoring his parents crown the hill behind the main hall. Tokugawa shoguns and their retainers guarded and maintained the mountain compound throughout the Edo period, protecting the steep wooded enclave entrusted to Nichiei by Nichiren himself.
