The Legislative Assembly occupies the final neoclassical imperial residence built in Saint Petersburg.

Court architect Andrei Stackenschneider planned Mariinsky Palace, alternatively recorded as Marie Palace, as an imperial residence in Saint Petersburg. The complex concluded the cycle of neoclassical residential builds commissioned for the imperial family. Today the structure accommodates the regional Legislative Assembly, anchoring daily administrative governance directly behind monumental classical facades.
