Officially named Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù, this mother church of the Society of Jesus established the architectural prototype for Counter-Reformation preaching spaces across Europe and overseas territories. Vignola and della Porta eliminated traditional side aisles, directing the congregation into a single wide nave under a cross vault. The layout prioritized acoustics, ensuring sermons carried without echoes.

Della Porta revised the exterior into the first recognized Baroque facade, stacking vertical elements over Vignola's flatter scheme. Michelangelo originally offered to design the structure without payment out of personal devotion, though patronage ultimately went to Farnese.
