Residents in Pigna trade morning quiet for the foot traffic across Piazza del Gesù, gaining a central base where daily commutes across the historic core bypass public transit entirely.
Officially named Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù, this mother church of the Society of Jesus established the architectural prototype for Counter-Reformation preaching spaces across Europe and overseas territories. Vignola and della Porta eliminated traditional side aisles, directing the congregation into a single wide nave under a cross vault. The layout prioritized acoustics, ensuring sermons carried without echoes.
Cardinal Alessandro Farnese funded the construction on ground previously occupied by Santa Maria della Strada, where Saint Ignatius of Loyola once prayed. Della Porta revised the exterior into the first recognized Baroque facade, stacking vertical elements over Vignola's flatter scheme. Inside, identical chapels behind gated balustrades replace aisles, while polychrome marble, gilding, and vaulted frescoes fill the space.
Michelangelo originally offered to design the structure without payment out of personal devotion, though patronage ultimately went to Farnese. Influenced by Charles Borromeo and the Council of Trent, the architects omitted an entrance narthex, pushing visitors directly into view of the high altar. Transepts shrink to short stubs, leaving the dome crossing to anchor sightlines toward the gem-studded Virgin icon in the Ignatius chapel.
