Golden Lane preserves the defensive quarters built for the castle guards inside the walls of Prague Castle.

Golden Lane forms a compact street of miniature dwellings built directly into the northern wall of Prague Castle. The passage originated as dedicated quarters for the personal castle guards of Emperor Rudolf. Confined by the fortress ramparts, each house was erected on a minimal footprint, creating cramped living spaces that served defensive personnel stationed permanently within the royal precinct.

Goldsmiths later moved into the modest structures, converting the former military barracks into workshops and giving the lane its lasting name. Today the narrow corridor faces relentless pedestrian congestion during public visiting hours. Long-term residents in the surrounding castle district treat the passage as a strictly off-hours route, bypassing the daytime bottlenecks to navigate Prague Castle when the gates empty.
