Long-term residents in Charlotte Amalie treat the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul as a functioning diocesan seat rather than a museum stop, attending services under its painted biblical ceiling.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral functions as the seat of the local diocese in Charlotte Amalie.

Danish royal authorities sanctioned the local Catholic congregation under King Christian, allowing the community to acquire its earliest church building from the crown. After fire and hurricane damage repeatedly ruined earlier structures on the island, construction crews finished the present masonry cathedral. The surviving sanctuary remains the mother church of the surrounding islands, standing on foundations laid after natural disasters.

Papal decrees elevated the building to cathedral status when Rome erected the regional prelature. Redemptorist clergy from the Baltimore Province originally staffed the parish until local diocesan priests took over administrative control. Overhead, elaborate murals display scenes from the Old and New Testaments across the nave ceiling. Ongoing preservation efforts and capital refurbishments protect the painted interior.
