Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral functions as the seat of the local diocese in Charlotte Amalie.

Danish royal authorities sanctioned the local Catholic congregation under King Christian, allowing the community to acquire its earliest church building from the crown. After fire and hurricane damage repeatedly ruined earlier structures on the island, construction crews finished the present masonry cathedral. The surviving sanctuary remains the mother church of the surrounding islands, standing on foundations laid after natural disasters.
