Long-term tenants in Arganzuela navigate thick commuter crowds around the station concourse each morning, trading daily noise for immediate rail access across the suburban Cercanías network.
The site began rail operations under the name Estación de Mediodía, later adopting its current name from the nearby basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Atocha. After a severe fire destroyed the original depot, Alberto de Palacio Elissague collaborated with Gustave Eiffel and Henry Saint James to erect a wrought iron hall with an inverted hull roof. Rafael Moneo later converted the decommissioned train shed into an enclosed tropical garden.
Moneo added a modern terminal to segregate commuter traffic from high-speed services. Underground platforms direct Cercanías trains into the rail tunnel beneath Paseo de la Castellana, while upper tracks handle intercity links to Andalusia and cross-border departures to France. Direct subterranean passageways connect the concourses to municipal metro lines, providing continuous transit across the city.
Market liberalization ended Renfe's monopoly across the platforms, introducing competing rail carriers to the high-speed corridors. The complex officially incorporates writer Almudena Grandes into its name, commemorating her work on station signage. Planned expansions include a multi-track underground high-speed tunnel linking the facility directly with Chamartín and adding a southern vestibule on Calle de Méndez Álvaro.
