Residents cross through Sendlinger Tor to enter the pedestrian zone along Sendlinger Straße directly from the junction at Sendlinger-Tor-Platz.
The gate stands at the southern edge of the historic old town as a surviving gothic fortification from the medieval expansion under Ludwig the Bavarian. Travelers once passed through the portal along the route toward Italy. Later demolitions removed the central tower while leaving the flanking towers intact. A remnant of the old defensive wall still borders Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße. The structure survived wartime bombing.
Today Sendlinger-Tor-Platz anchors surface traffic where Lindwurmstraße and Sonnenstraße converge. Beneath the pavement, the station functions as a key transfer point for U-Bahn and tram networks across the city. Above ground, Sendlinger Straße extends through the gateway as a pedestrian zone free from vehicular traffic. Residents navigate dense commuter crowds around the plaza entrances while gaining immediate rail connections.
