Sendlinger Tor marks the southern boundary of the medieval old town and anchors a major underground transit hub. The surviving gothic structure connects central pedestrian shopping streets with the outer boulevards.

The gate stands at the southern edge of the historic old town as a surviving gothic fortification from the medieval expansion under Ludwig the Bavarian. Travelers once passed through the portal along the route toward Italy. Later demolitions removed the central tower while leaving the flanking towers intact. A remnant of the old defensive wall still borders Herzog-Wilhelm-Straße. The structure survived wartime bombing.
