The Duchess of Bourbon commissioned the residence when the French nobility abandoned Versailles to re-establish private mansions closer to the capital. Builders broke ground on former duelling meadows known as the Pré-au-Clercs, creating a spacious estate in what soon evolved into the aristocratic quarter of Faubourg Saint-Germain.
