Residents in Faubourg Saint-Germain trade quiet evening streets for barricades and police cordons whenever the National Assembly debates contentious legislation.
The Duchess of Bourbon commissioned the residence when the French nobility abandoned Versailles to re-establish private mansions closer to the capital. Builders broke ground on former duelling meadows known as the Pré-au-Clercs, creating a spacious estate in what soon evolved into the aristocratic quarter of Faubourg Saint-Germain. Armand de Madaillan de Lesparre secured the adjoining parcel to raise the companion Hôtel de Lassay.
Architects Pierre Cailleteau and Jean Aubert drew inspiration from the Grand Trianon, shaping an Italian-style palace with roofs concealed behind balustrades. Interior layouts introduced dedicated corridors, which allowed residents to bypass private reception salons without walking through them. Matching river façades mirrored the companion mansion with alternating columns and classical carvings.
The structure now functions as the debating chamber for the National Assembly, housing the lower legislative branch of parliament. Successive reconstructions erased the domestic royal apartments to make room for parliamentary benches and committee halls. Positioned across from Place de la Concorde, the complex anchors state governance while maintaining security perimeters around public plazas.
