Researchers working out of the National Library must navigate heavy tourist foot traffic along the Old Town approaches, trading quiet reading rooms for congested corridors outside the gates.
Founded on the site of a medieval monastery damaged during the Hussite conflicts, the complex expanded into a vast Jesuit college that eventually absorbed the Charles University book collections. The resulting compound ranks among the largest architectural grounds in Prague, surpassed in physical footprint only by Prague Castle. Its halls house landmark collections of Mozartiana, historical Czech literature, and records from Comenius.
Following the suppression of the Jesuit order, Empress Maria Theresa re-established the compound as an observatory, university, and public library. The institution gained legal deposit privileges, obliging domestic printers to submit copies of their publications. The grounds also hosted an early industrial exhibition to demonstrate regional manufacturing prowess, and the national library subsequently received the UNESCO Jikji prize.
Severe storage constraints prompted municipal plans to relocate collections to Letná, though the winning modern design by Jan Kaplický was overruled before construction began. The Czech National Library continues operating inside the historic halls while municipal tourism operators manage guided routes through the Baroque library and Astronomical tower, leaving working scholars to navigate steady tourist traffic.
