About the place
About the place

Venice established the quarantine station on Lazzaretto Vecchio to isolate maritime contagion before ships could reach the city.

Venetian authorities instituted a complete maritime cordon around Lazzaretto Vecchio, using armed patrol vessels to prevent quarantined crews from reaching the main settlement. Incoming sailors endured mandatory lagoon isolation while workers scrubbed and fumigated their vessels and merchandise. This systematic decontamination protocol protected the republic and gave international languages the terms lazaret and lazaretto.

The complex repurposed the monastic quarters of Santa Maria di Nazareth, converting friars' bedrooms into hospital wards for infected patients. Interior partitions segregated patients at different stages of illness to halt cross-contamination. When the republic established Lazzaretto Nuovo to process incoming crews, this island specialized exclusively in plague treatment before later governance converted it into a military post.
