About the place
About the place

Rome maintains several major papal basilicas, and this complex remains under the direct extraterritorial sovereignty of the Holy See.

Emperors and popes expanded the original memorial structure raised above the burial vault of Paul of Tarsus into an expansive church with a broad transept, multiple aisles, and detailed mosaics. The complex encompasses an active Benedictine abbey and ranks among the major papal basilicas. Although surrounded by the Italian capital, the Holy See exercises full extraterritorial property rights over the entire religious precinct.

Standing beyond the historic Aurelian walls exposed the sanctuary during medieval raids, prompting the papacy to fortify the monastery and adjacent village. Earthquakes repeatedly collapsed the roof beams, while a disastrous fire during roof repairs destroyed the antique nave. Careful rebuilding revived the vast hall directly above the apostle sarcophagus, maintaining continuity for resident Benedictine monks.
