About the place

Palazzo Brera functions as the primary intellectual sanctuary of the city, bringing fine arts, botanical research, and astronomy under a shared baroque roof.

The monumental complex developed from an early monastic site into a major Jesuit educational college. Architect Francesco Maria Richini drew the principal layout, though a devastating plague outbreak halted construction for decades before his son completed the work. Giuseppe Piermarini later finished the central arcaded courtyard, where a monumental bronze casting of Napoleon by Antonio Canova stands today.

The palace operates as a dense campus shared by several distinct cultural institutions. The Pinacoteca di Brera and the historic art academy occupy major wings alongside the national library and the Lombard science institute. Behind the stone galleries, an astronomical observatory and an active botanical garden provide dedicated facilities where researchers and university students work away from museum tour corridors.

Institutional reorganisations altered the original monastic fabric over time. The medieval church of Santa Maria in Brera lost its Gothic portal and decorative frescoes when authorities deconsecrated the building. Workers divided the old nave horizontally into separate tiers, converting the upper volume into gallery exhibition halls and assigning the lower level to ancient sculpture collections.
