About the place

Parco Sempione forms the central open ground of Milan, connecting historic ducal fortifications with civic monuments across extensive English-style landscape gardens.

The grounds occupy the historic Visconti hunting estate beside Sforza Castle. Following civic protests against residential subdivision proposals, municipal planner Cesare Beruto reserved the military parade ground for public greenery. Architect Emilio Alemagna shaped the terrain as an English landscape park with winding carriage roads, an artificial pond, and wide open lawns connecting the fortress to the Arch of Peace.

Major cultural structures stand across the perimeter, including the Triennale design museum inside Palazzo dell'Arte and the civic sports arena. Gio Ponti built the steel panoramic tower, while the restored Sirenette iron bridge spans the central watercourse after being relocated from the covered city canals. An enclosed perimeter with municipal camera surveillance secures the public walking paths and reading library.

Sculptures by Giorgio de Chirico and Antonio Paradiso sit along the tree-lined promenades alongside the municipal aquarium pavilion. Near the arena, the historic sulfur fountain known as Fontana dell'acqua marcia continues flowing with mineral spring water that is marked non-potable. Daily life in the park centres on outdoor training, cultural exhibitions, and transit between the residential northern quarters and downtown.
