About the place

Torre Velasca redefined post-war Milan through reinforced concrete and utilitarian residential design.

The municipality designated bomb-damaged public land for redevelopment, granting permits to construct a multi-storey tower for combined commercial and residential functions. The BBPR architectural team collaborated with engineer Arturo Danusso to create an urban symbol of post-war recovery. Initial proposals envisioned an exterior of steel and glass, but material shortages and domestic industrial limitations prompted a revision.

Switching to reinforced concrete with stone cladding reduced building expenses and aligned the project with regional architectural traditions. The finished structure stands as a prominent example of Italian post-rationalist brutalism, stacking private residential quarters atop commercial offices. Its silhouette became a recognized civic marker, later chosen as the official crest and identity for the local club AS Velasca.
