About the place
About the place

Villa Castello anchors ducal garden heritage in the northern hills outside Florence.

Cosimo de' Medici established his rural court here after consolidating power in Florence. The Medici family rebuilt an older fortified structure on ground named after ancient Roman cisterns. Sandro Botticelli displayed his masterworks The Birth of Venus and Primavera inside the residential rooms before they transferred to urban galleries. The layout pioneered formal Italian landscape design and shaped French court gardens.

Niccolo Tribolo and Giorgio Vasari engineered the terraces and villa enlargement, relying on Piero da San Casciano to direct water from Monte Morello through uphill aqueducts. The upper terrace features trained citrus groves and an elaborate artificial grotto, while the lower terrace holds hedge compartments and a cypress labyrinth. Long-stay residents encounter a preserved Renaissance hydraulic network rather than a standard park.
