Il Pentagono: cosa c’è intorno, come arrivare e quando andare · 2026

Civilian and military personnel spend their shifts navigating sprawling low-rise rings instead of office elevators, turning routine cross-department meetings into brisk marches across the complex.

Built during wartime to consolidate military administration, the complex functions as a vast administrative fortress.

Before construction, war administration occupied temporary quarters along the National Mall and scattered offices across adjacent states. A facility in Foggy Bottom failed to resolve the shortage and passed to the Department of State. Officials selected land in Arlington County across the Potomac River to unite operations, clearing industrial terrain previously known as Hell's Bottom for the project.

Strict wartime conservation rules capped vertical elevation to reserve structural steel for combat equipment. Planners spread office floor space horizontally across broad rings rather than erecting a skyscraper. The pentagonal geometry originated at the Arlington Farms parcel and remained intact after relocation to the airport site, producing a symmetrical layout reminiscent of classic gunpowder star forts.

President Roosevelt moved the construction zone to the airport grounds to preserve sightlines toward the capital from Arlington Cemetery. Builder John McShain managed the rapid assembly alongside regional contractors while global conflict expanded. Today the structure operates as the metonym for national military leadership, requiring relocated personnel to adapt to rigorous physical access controls.

The main attraction of America or a brief look at Washington

We are leaving for New York tomorrow. And I suddenly realized that I still haven't told you about Washington. First of all, Washington is very tourist-friendly. All the most significant places are within walking distance of each other. Admission to most places is free, so you want to visit as many as possible. The architecture is very different from most American cities; there are practically no skyscrapers. It felt like I was walking somewhere in Europe; it reminded me of Paris, it was just as cozy and comfortable. We were in Washington for two days. This time is quite enough to visit the main attractions. Of course, we didn't get inside the White House and couldn't break into the Pentagon. But to my great surprise, it is possible to do so. You need to sign up for a visit to the White House two months in advance, and to the Pentagon no later than six months in advance! The Capitol really captured my heart (no surprise there). Every year, about 4.5 million tourists visit the famous Congress building. There are 540 rooms in the Capitol in total, but tourists can only see 2 of them. The first and second floors house the Congress offices, and the third is occupied by the House of Representatives, the Rotunda, and the Senate. Tours of the Capitol are absolutely free. Getting to the Capitol is no trouble at all. The country's main building stands in the very center of Washington, and all the main streets of the city lead to it. At night, it looks especially majestic; opposite it is an alley that leads directly to the famous Washington Monument. Everything around is planted with beautiful lawns where you can have a picnic while admiring the beautiful sunset.

A bus tour, or a race against time.

Before heading West, we had a few days to spend as we pleased. We decided not to stay in New York, and in a couple of moments, we booked a bus tour. The tour route was as follows: Philadelphia – Washington D.C. – Niagara Falls. Along the way, we also stopped at Watkins Glen State Park, a glass museum, and visited the Canadian border. Initially, everything went off-plan. The bus from Cape Cod to New York turned out to be a completely different one and arrived at the wrong place. Instead, we ended up in a neighboring state. We had a couple of hours before the bus departure, and we were in the middle of nowhere, having absolutely no idea what to do. It was very early in the morning, and there was no one to ask. Google suggested we were near some subway station. We didn't know what kind of subway it was or where it went. We decided to just go there and ask the station staff. EZ ride Fortunately, we could catch a train directly to Brooklyn from there, and from there, we could somehow get to our bus. After figuring out the directions, we boarded the train and headed to New York. By the time we reached Brooklyn, we realized what a mess we were in. Time was tight, and we were already missing our tour. We had to call and text our guide: "Sorry, we'll be a little late, please wait for us." When we boarded the next train directly to the bus station, the guide started calling and texting incessantly. Eventually, when we reached the departure point, the bus was already gone. And again, we were incredibly lucky. My travel companion managed to find a Chinese bus a couple of meters away that was heading to Philadelphia. This was our chance! Paying about 12 bucks, we jumped on the bus and texted the guide that we would catch up with them there. We did manage to catch up with them, and by running from one bus to another, we saved the situation. We didn't really get to see Philadelphia, as they were already preparing to move on by the time we arrived. But the rest of the tour went without incident. Philadelphia: hello, goodbye I really liked the capital of the USA. Everything was perfectly clean and well-maintained, the buildings stood out for their architecture, and we saw FBI cars on the streets :) This time without delays, be more careful in the future I would have liked to stay in Washington longer. Despite the fact that we managed to see the White House, the "Pencil" (Washington Monument), the Pentagon, and the Lincoln Memorial, it wasn't enough for me. My soul craved adventure and exploration. I need to return someday and finish what I started. The Pencil looked even better from afar than up close Old man Lincoln Our next stop was Niagara Falls. The views from above were breathtaking. This waterfall is truly beautiful! It's worth seeing in real life; photos can't convey the experience. By the way, at night, the lighting turns on, and it looks completely different! Day view. I won't spoil the night one :) The tour also included a short film about the history of Niagara Falls (quite interesting), and we also took a boat ride right up to it. I don't know how my phone didn't get swept away by the water, but we were soaked to the bone. Even the raincoat given to everyone at the entrance didn't help. So, for decent photos from below, bring waterproof protection for your camera. Despite the fact that the tour was quite short, it was nice to feel the atmosphere of an endless road trip. You could turn on music, sit and look out the window, reflecting on the diversity of places in America. Not far from Niagara Watkins Glen State Park After the tour, we returned to New York happy, and the next day we headed to the airport. After arriving, we were supposed to pick up a rental car, meet some girls from our group, and set off to conquer the West Coast.

Golden September

Well, the 'golden September' has finally arrived. After finishing work and leaving Cape Cod, feeling like true, confident Americans, my Azerbaijani friend and I (some flew home earlier, others chose to see different parts of America) headed to New York with our Mexican friend, Luis, to stay with his cousin for a week! I discovered New York from different sides, good ones of course. What could we have seen in a day when we arrived in June? Almost nothing) but here we had a week) ah! We saw everything we planned. We, the traveling frogs, didn't walk through the whole thing, but a significant part of the BIG APPLE. We even took a boat to the Statue of Liberty twice! Yes, once wasn't enough for us... just thanks to Luis, our friend, who made a mistake, so the first time we just sailed past the statue))) There was such a theatrical scene from my friend and me, we were so actively saying everything we thought about Luis... apparently, the ship's crew didn't want to see corpses on board and offered us a free trip the next day, since that was the last cruise for the day. After a week in New York, we set off with some Chinese travelers (ugh, I got so tired of their Chinese language ^_^) on the route: New York - Niagara Falls – Washington – Philadelphia – New York. We traveled for three days by bus, stopping at beautiful places along the way. Guys, Niagara Falls is a fairy tale) Especially when you sail towards it, and you get swept away by the flow of water, and everyone is screaming, squealing, showing emotions, and you are laughing and thinking, 'God, this is the best thing I've ever seen.' I am a veeeery emotional person. A view from the middle between the territory of Canada and the USA. I couldn't get a visa to Canada, I didn't have the right anymore=( And the view is more beautiful there, but I was impressed for a lifetime by this too, I want more!!! Washington D.C. – we all know it's the capital of America. A historic city and, let's say, the official face of the USA. And not visiting it, I think, is not allowed! The Capitol, the White House, the Pentagon – familiar things, and they are worth seeing in person. * The Chinese, being nauseatingly punctual, got tired of waiting for the forever-late Russian and Kazakh girls and decided to just leave right in front of our not-so-fast butts at the souvenir shop! Hmm, we said, turning around... except for one girl from Kazakhstan, she started calling the guide in a panic, who simply didn't answer. After 30 minutes, we got through to him and were grateful that they had left. We got a chance to explore the city on our own, and we walked for almost 2 hours, walking from point A, where they left us, to point B, where they were waiting for us in 2 hours. We were so happy and laughed a looot about such a ridiculous situation, the bus left without the tourists! And indeed, everything happens for the best. (But we didn't run late anymore) * * In Philadelphia, we were only there for an hour because we were running very late and wouldn't make it to New York in time. So I can't say anything. Philadelphia is a big city, with skyscrapers like New York, only there are no people there)) that's it)) * And so we returned to New York on September 19th, and on the afternoon of September 20th, we were supposed to fly to Russia. And you know, it's such a feeling... that everything is over. This is CAMP SYNDROME. You kind of feel like you'll come back here, but it won't be the same, and the people won't be the same, etc. So we, two traveling frogs, returned to Russia. For the first 2 weeks, I felt bad, I didn't understand what was happening, I waaanted to go back so much, and the houses were small, and there was no sun, and few smiling people. But studies and friends brought me back to reality. Today is January 31st, half a year has passed, and it feels like I dreamed it, it was suuuper, don't miss your chance, don't be afraid of anything, and believe that this will be one of the best summer periods

Cultural part

July ...the hottest time, without a doubt. Beyonce, Jay Z. For me, this couple is the gold standard of relationships and wonderful musicians. On July 7th, I was lucky enough to attend their concert in Baltimore, but let's take things in order! After my birthday, which went great, I didn't know what to do with myself or where to go with friends for a week, and then I saw online that they were organizing a US tour called "On the run". After Googling a bit more information, we didn't think twice and went to the student center that organized such trips, and "Hallelujah", a couple of days later we were sitting at the Beyonce, Jay Z concert at MTBankStadium, which holds over 70,000 spectators, and it was completely packed; I had never seen such excitement in my life. It was simply unreal: the show, the fans who danced to every song for two and a half hours. It felt like I was at the biggest party of my life, helicopters occasionally distracted my attention, twilight had already turned into night, but the concert was only gaining momentum. I was just happy that day, despite everything; in those hours, only one thing existed for me: just this concert. How I didn't want it to end. Waking up at 6 AM, I set my alarm for 5 minutes later again, then 5 minutes later again, and again. At 7, I jumped up and realized with a shout that I was almost late for the bus for the trip to Washington and the football match between Manchester United (MU) and Inter. My cell phone shows July 23rd, and I thought that I had been in the States for exactly 2 months, but had seen very little so far. But a couple of seconds later, this thought flew away somewhere and common sense prevailed; that's right, I went to brush my teeth and quickly get ready for the bus. Taking my bike, I pedaled with all my might, and only then did I really wake up. After going over another bump, I realized that I could easily ride without using my hands. Although a month and a half ago, after an incident, I was thinking about giving my bike to someone and walking. I made it on time, took my seat, and greeted my new acquaintances; by that time, I was already familiar with students from almost every country in Europe (well, if you asked everyone where they were from), who were also mostly going to the MU-Inter match rather than the Washington tour. After 3 hours of riding in sleep mode, we were already walking through museums that stretched along the main avenue of Washington. "A very beautiful and interesting city in terms of its architecture," I caught myself thinking for the umpteenth time, entering the Lincoln Memorial, having visited the height of the Monument, from which, by the way, you can see both the White House in all its glory and the Pentagon, just like in the movies; in the distance, I even made out Georgetown, or so it seemed to me. In any case, this city shows the fullness of the architectural and cultural heritage of the American people. Enriched and charged with positive energy for the whole day, closer to 6 PM our bus headed towards the stadium called "FedExField stadium". Rooney, Nani, De Gea, Chicharito, and even Vidic, who had already moved from MU to Inter by that time, I had only seen all these football players exclusively on TV, and now I am sitting in a stadium with an audience of 61,736 football fans just like me, and I am just happy and enjoying the game. Since this was a kind of non-decisive game, the teams didn't really go on the attack, they defended more, only Manchester's counter-attacks made the audience stand up. The game came to an end, and I thought that the 0-0 score was the end of the game, but after the final whistle, people didn't go home, they stayed in their seats. That's when I wondered why I was the only one who stood up and immediately sat back down, waiting for something, not understanding what would happen next. And then everything is simple, according to the rules of the Guinness Cup, if the score remains a draw, the teams start a penalty

Wandering the roads, or the war for a parking spot!)

August 22nd Our next destination was Arlington Cemetery, since Jen and I decided that some famous people might be buried there) And that's when the fun began))) At first, I gave the right directions, but then I had to think fast, and I just blurted out a random direction - we need to go there!))) As a result, instead of arriving at the cemetery, we ended up in the city of Arlington, Virginia. From there, we somehow got onto the highway and drove to the Pentagon, and then took some back roads to reach the cemetery) It started raining, so we decided not to get out of the car))) By the way, you're not allowed to take photos of the Pentagon, and only later, while looking through my photos, did I see a picture of the Pentagon and, confused, tried to remember when I managed to do that) It turned out I was just taking pictures of everything from the car)))))))) Then we decided to go to Georgetown again, where we had already been one evening)))) The weather cleared up completely, but there were issues with parking)))) We looked for a spot for a veeeery long time, and eventually found one, although it was on the other side of the street. Jen, tired of searching, shouted, "I don't care! This is my parking spot!" and somehow crossed the road and parked facing the opposite direction of the other cars))))) "Jen, maybe you should park properly, I'm kind of scared to leave the car like this! Someone might tow it to the impound lot." Jen thought about it! "Alright, but you, Tanya, stand in this parking spot and don't let anyone in!!!" I stood in the parking spot, and Jen started to turn around!) What a mess that was! Someone wanted to park, and I started saying that it was our parking spot! When Jen saw it from the car, she turned around 10 times faster))) It caused a traffic jam))) Having parked successfully, we took off, leaving the other drivers to sort out the situation))) While walking along the waterfront, we met a ship captain who does half-hour water tours))) He was trying to get people to ride, but we didn't want to pay) "Ladies, would you like a ride?" - "Only if it's free!" - "Well, I'm inviting you))) Of course, for free)" I was totally shocked, what a day) Departure was in half an hour, so we went for a walk and admired the beauty of Georgetown)) I was amazed by 4 large women who turned on music on their yacht, drank wine, and danced)) Good for them, they were having a blast!))) We got to talking with the captain, and it turned out he was from Ghana, used to work as a captain on cruise ships, but now he started his own business))) Overall, I liked it, Washington is a veeeery beautiful city after all)))))) Quite tired and exhausted, Jen and I decided to spend the rest of the evening on the roof, and Jen had to drive back to Wilmington in the evening. We bought ice cream in the Mexican district and went to James's house))))
