Knightsbridge residents share their daily grocery runs with massive international shopping crowds. Anyone staying for months learns to pick up evening essentials elsewhere to bypass the dense retail halls.
Charles Henry Harrod began the retail enterprise as a wholesale grocery specialising in tea before acquiring a shop near Hyde Park. His son Charles Digby Harrod expanded the business into adjoining properties to sell perfumes, medicines, and stationery. The main hall complex holds listed heritage status and ranks as the largest department store in Europe, designed by architect C. W. Stephens following a destructive fire.
Harrods introduced England's moving staircase with a leather conveyor belt and mahogany balustrades, offering brandy to nervous riders. The business extended credit to Sigmund Freud and Oscar Wilde while also selling exotic animals such as lemurs and lions. Its toy department stocked early Peter Rabbit editions and sold the teddy bear that inspired Winnie-the-Pooh.
