Charles Atwood designed the structure for the World Columbian Exposition under the direction of D. H. Burnham and Company. Built with brick beneath its fair plaster, the hall outlasted the temporary fair pavilions in Jackson Park. The exterior gained limestone cladding to retain its Beaux Arts profile, while Alfred Shaw created a replacement interior in the Art Moderne style. The Field Museum occupied the halls before moving north.
Julius Rosenwald backed the institution to replicate European technical halls like Munich Deutsches Museum. Waldemar Kaempffert took charge as director after leaving The New York Times, patterning exhibits on collections in Kensington and Vienna. Kaempffert partnered with University of Chicago faculty to verify exhibit scholarship. The institution debuted during the Century of Progress Exposition with staff drawn from the fair.
