About the place

Jesuit builders shaped this monumental structure in the narrow streets of the old town.

The complex began through an endowment from Rome-based merchant Pons Neva following guidance from Philippe Néri. Jesuit arrivals occupied land beside a communal mill, purchasing adjacent domestic plots to clear room for a school and an initial chapel. Major construction later produced the present nave, after which the order sold vaulting scaffolding to the local diocese. Architectural ties to the cathedral point to Jean-André Guiberto.

Local patricians including Senator Blancardi and Jean-Baptiste Fabri financed private interior chapels. Papal decree forced the Jesuit expulsion, placing the property under crown control before concordat reforms created the parish. Aycart finished the Baroque facade, historical monument classification followed, and archival plans in Paris preserve unresolved design credits.
