About the place

Gare du Sud anchors daily life in Libération by combining an Eiffel-designed metal hall with public dining and reading rooms.

The complex began as the terminus for the Chemins de Fer de Provence railway line, connecting the coast with mountain towns toward Digne-les-Bains. Architect Prosper Bobin designed the neoclassical passenger building with ceramic tiles and marble flooring, while the rear metal train shed came from Gustave Eiffel. Rural growers used the trains to supply the surrounding Libération market with regional agricultural produce.

Passenger operations ceased when services moved to a replacement terminal nearby, leaving the original structures abandoned. Municipal proposals to dismantle the facade and tear down the Eiffel glass roof triggered broad public resistance, prompting the culture ministry to halt demolition. The preserved station now functions as a covered food court and neighborhood library, anchoring daily activity away from the seafront.
