Residents around Sao Chingcha trade direct access to modern rapid transit for quiet shophouse alleys and dawn routines set by Wat Suthat.
Brahmin priests once performed swinging rites on the structure to honor deities, swinging across high arcs in front of Wat Suthat. The original timbers stood before the Devasathan shrine under early royal patronage before municipal expansion for a gas plant shifted the frame to its current crossroads. Structural lightning strikes and recurrent fatal falls during the ceremonies led authorities to end the ritual permanently.
Weather exposure degraded the pillars until craftsmen replaced the entire frame using fresh teak trunks. Carpenters shaped new structural and support columns, allowing King Bhumibol Adulyadej to preside over the rededication ceremonies. Curators moved the retired original timbers to the Bangkok National Museum, while heritage officials submitted the swing and Wat Suthat together for future World Heritage listing.
