À propos du lieu
The world's largest operational launch facility remains an active aerospace hub run under bilateral lease agreements.
Russia operates this expansive space launch complex on territory leased within the steppe. The surrounding city grew to house aerospace personnel, engineers, and support infrastructure for orbital missions. Long-term residents coordinate daily routines with strict access checkpoints and industrial schedules that govern all movements.

Engineers selected the vast plains of Tyuratam because radio guidance systems required clear signal reception over expansive distances away from major settlements. The installation continues to stage every crewed Russian spaceflight, turning the surrounding community into a specialised base centered on rocket maintenance and orbital departures.
Proximity to high-thrust rocketry brings notable environmental consequences to the desert landscape. Historic propellant use such as toxic heptyl has raised health concerns among nearby populations and affected flight corridors. Residents and extended visitors face real trade-offs between witnessing space history and coping with industrial contamination.
Associations
- Crewed spaceflight
- Steppe isolation
- Toxic propellants
Faits
- The facility is the largest operational space launch complex in terms of surface area.
- All Russian crewed space missions depart from this spaceport.
- The location was chosen partly so radio guidance systems could receive uninterrupted signals over flat terrain.
- Toxic fuels like unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine have caused regional environmental contamination and health concerns.
