Dear Members of the Selection Committee, My name is Suttibaev Marat and I am a third-year student in Auezov South Kazakhstan University at the faculty of Philology. My specialty is teacher and translator of foreign languages: two foreign languages that are English and Korean. I am elated to seize this unique opportunity which will expand my valid education and build new chances for my future career. I am incredibly interested in going to America because of its multicultural environment, wide range of services to find a job and friendly society. As I always planned to spend some time abroad during my studies, I started to investigate “Work and travel” programme from my university time. I am eager to get insight into American culture, learn new perspectives, get experienced and exchange ideas with different people all over the world whom I will meet there. The reason is it is important for me to understand cross-cultural differences and improve international communicative skills. Therefore, I passed exam to enter South Kazakhstan University from my hometown Tashkent in Uzbekistan. Now, it is my aim to go abroad, exactly to America. I am sure that I will get the best experiences as I am foreign student here and have such a life of foreigner. However, going to America by this programme is another degree of exchanging thoughts and changing mindset as well as for me and future generation that I will teach and lead to be open to the world. Therefore, I participate constructively in all the studies and meetings with foreigners in Kazakhstan . This is the second reason that motivates me and helps to keep my eyes on this opportunity. I am confident to have an excellent command of English-speaking people which would enable me to get on well and adjust easily. As my first experience as a foreign student was back in the autumn of 2019, I can admit that I am sociable, hard-working, reliable, self-assured, and open-minded. Such characters of my nature helped and still does to become the best of me no matter where I am. Сколько себя помню я всегда любила путешествовать, посещать разные города, получать для себя массу впечатлений от новых мест и открывать для себя новые знания. Однако, становясь взрослым ты понимаешь, что это требует огромных усилий и моральных, финансовых затрат. Во всяком случае, сейчас в 21 веке люди имеют множество возможностей путешествовать, работать или учиться заграницей. Меня это крайне радует, что у всех людей есть одинаковые возможности исполнить свою мечту, расширить свой кругозор и обменяться культурами. Первой страной, где я сама, без сопровождения родителей, начну свое удивительное путешествие будет крупнейший представитель Западного мира - Соединённые Штаты Америки. За такое преимущество я и многие другие студенты очень благодарны и глубоко рады, что существует программа Work & Travel USA (InterExchange). Важно помнить, что программы студенческого обмена за границей никогда не бывают легкими. Для этого нужно много работать и прикладывать усилия. Однако, наградой является будущее с отличными возможностями, расширение своих знаний, получение значимого культурного опыта, также разнообразные возможности познакомиться с американцами и шанс узнать из первых рук об американском обществе, культуре и ценностях. Для моей будущей карьерной перспективы, я настойчиво решила на своем опыте ощутить контраст культур, ценности разных миров. С другой стороны, это даст мне самореализацию, путем становления самостоятельной в иностранном для нашего менталитета стране и огромный опыт увидеть скопление разных культур, национальностей, или даже рас. Америка является очень давней моей мечтой или даже многих. Американская культура оказывает большое влияние на наш мир, особенно на западный мир. Американская музыка звучит во всем мире, которая также является моей любимей и почти всех, кого я знаю. Отсюда идет мое страстное желание познакомиться с культурой страны. «Адамды заман билейді» («Эпоха управляет человеком»). Если мы сами не откажемся от своих традиции национальных и духовных ценностей, нам ничего не навредит, а наоборот улучшит. Я считаю, что нам нужно глубже изучать как восточные страны, так и европейские: их истории, культуры, то, с какими проблемами они сталкиваются в процессе своего развития. Несмотря на ускоренную динамику глобализма по планете, сейчас время расцвета Востока. Модернизация восточных стран, непременно связанный с сохранением их культурной самобытности и идентичности, та же самая Япония и т.д. А именно расцвет стран Средней Азии, в том числе, Казахстан , поэтому нам надо стремиться держать баланс, «одновременно ориентироваться и на демократический Запад, и на традиционный Восток». Это помогло бы нам открыть новые возможности и перспективы для интеграции наших ученых с зарубежными коллегами. Такое решение помогло бы развить детальный анализ западных и восточных ценностей, оценки их применимости в казахстанских условиях, ведь мы молодая страна. Нам есть куда расти, и можно только приветствовать стремление взять самое лучшее из «копилок» и западной, и восточной культур. Именно мы, молодые люди, можем взять только лучшее для своей страны от развитых держав, как Америка и т.д. В придачу, эта программа студенческого обмена поможет мне в анализе в своей научной работе. I caught fire with the goal instantly, but I made a firm and steady step towards the dream relatively recently, which I am very grateful to myself and my parents. Summer in Kazakhstan goes according to one scenario — fun, but unproductive no matter how hard you try. It seems to me that Work and travel is a mandatory part of student life and a huge opportunity that should not be missed. This is an invaluable experience that you can't get anywhere else. Probably every young person wants to work abroad, because it gives so many opportunities. Firstly, you can learn a foreign language, and up to a very good level. Secondly, there is an opportunity to learn the customs and traditions of the country, just to see how the local people live. Thirdly, during work, new great friends from all over the world are usually made, you can have fun in pleasant company. Big dreams and shattered plans When I was in the 10th grade, I became interested in Western culture. I watched films, series, read a lot about the USA and life there. And I decided to live the American life at least a little. And for this I had only 1 opportunity, this is to enter there. I was preparing for exams, taking them one by one. But when it came to the SAT exam, it was canceled due to covid19. At this point, I lost the whole point of working on this dream. Acceptance of the present and study in Kazakhstan And I realized that all my plans collapsed. I began to prepare for the UNT and began to consider the universities of Kazakhstan . Now I am studying in Almaty, thinking that I have already missed my opportunity to fly to the United States and at least see American life a little. Sudden Opportunities and New Hope Watching instagram stories, I came across a story of my classmate, where he shows how he flies to the USA under the work and travel program. I was shocked. Immediately began to look for information about such programs. I was born and grew up in the city of Aktobe, located in the western region of Kazakhstan . Currently, I am a second-year student at Kudaibergen Zhubanov Regional University. As someone from a hospitable and cohesive society, travelling and understanding a culture is always the topic of my interest that makes me aware of my community as well as other communities that are different to mine. I, therefore, devote my spare time to exploring various community related things that allow me immersive experience in relevance to this. As someone in the growing up phase in life, a youth, I have had travelled a few parts of my country and developed an unyielding desire for a Student Exchange Program recently. As far as now, I have no success at such an opportunity. Although not being fortunate enough, I see the student exchange program as a very beneficial chapter that a person can experience in their university episode of life. It is indeed a remarkable opportunity to be a participant in the phase. Having the access to such a program would possibly be a once in a lifetime opportunity to better my knowledge in many things, ideally, the cultures thousands of miles away and a global level confidence and knowledge on many things. Throughout my lifetime, I travelled within the country on several occasions, on various purposes: to visit friends, to study, comprehending various cultural elements, as well as for adventure and unwinding. In my opinion, I believe travelling is part of a transition to adulthood; enhancing the knowledge of surroundings, possibly the most efficient route in gaining immense knowledge of the world of things and culture. In a nutshell, I regard this as an expansion of the education process to acquaint myself with numerous unknown. Of course, there are no particular definitions of youth traveling, my opinion as it is. One of my most recent travelling episode that I would like to share herein is my travel in 2022. A youth travelling program organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, where I went to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest metropolis, to participate in a forum. The length of the trip was very short, about 3 days. I went there along with others, mostly my friends and some strangers of my age; we were not accompanied by our parents. What was the most interesting there that it was my first time on a plane. As I walked up the ramp to the entrance of the plane, the butterflies came in the pit of my stomach. A strong and strange sensation of agitation appeared in me. It was as if my legs would collapse at any moment of that time. This is notably the experience which I could never forget. Oh! Good heavens! Little did I know that I was scared of heights until the plane took off. Aargh! Not only that, it was my first-time unaccompanied travel, too. The nervousness and fear cast over my eyes to the deep in my soul. Never before the state of my mind and soul had gone through such feelings as I bordered the plane. In order to boost myself out of this, rolled my eyes and I said with a teeny-weeny smile to my own feelings: get out of my way! Interestingly enough, it worked! Little time after, I felt more comfortable by being there than ever before. All the negativities were replaced with positivity, so were the feelings and emotions that I had. The most astonishing part of the experience so far was yet to happen; the discovery of my plane seat. Zoinks! Holy Smokes! Luckily enough, my seat was reserved by the window. From there I could enjoy the absolutely fantastic panoramic view of the downtown of my hometown. A captivating, magnificent photographic look that filled my heart with happiness; thrilling. Never seen before views were just before my eyes. While I was looking at those views, I remembered the memories that was the present just minutes ago. A little girl in front of you lives in a rural village in Kazakhstan , dreaming of walking by the sea and see the World. There were frequent talks in her family of teachers about their child's future. The girl understood she had to work hard and wished only one thing – to get to a better school. She was accepted, but her parents could not let her go far from home. A year passed by, yet hope never waned, the fire in her eyes so bright. In 9th grade, she took an Olympiad, “iQanat.” The process went smoothly, yet none of the competitors knew what came after it. In August, selection began, and she won an invitation to the prestigious school. Forty-five thousand children took part, and she was one of the just two hundred accepted. She runs to her parents to announce her victory and say that she is going to Borovoe – the pearl of Kazakhstan , a fantastic mountain land harboring mysterious wonders. Her parents were proud and happy, but they still could not let go. The girl quietly packs up her most precious belongings from her room. When her parents leave, she calls a taxi and goes on her life's greatest adventure thus far. Despite the lack of permission, she went to build her bright future and develop her true self. After her arrival, she faced many challenges. She learned to make it by herself through perseverance, making her who she is now: a caring friend, a daughter to be proud of, and a role model for all the other students of this Gifted and Talented School. She found her place in academic development and an outlet for her creative arts – theatrical, prose, poetry, and music. She became a volunteer at the iQanat Olympiads and an organizer of many events like “Movie Fest” and the “Model UN.” These events shaped her leadership skills. Then, she was an intern of “The Teachers’ Lab” – a teaching professionals' website resource aimed at collating and sharing educational materials and ideas. It helped her to understand the nuances of this deeply complicated system. now, after graduating from school, she is studying at the Karaganda University named after Buketov in the first year. Programs such as Work and Travel will help to give hope and light a fire inside us. This girl, having learned this program, realized that she should not give up and she is sincerely grateful to such people who help young people see the world and gain experience. This girl is chasing a dream and building her bright future. A degree in Work and Travel program solves this problem because it allows students to develop analytical skills and be critical of the media. I want to discover the world stage from the United States. The country is rich in cultural and historical heritage, but at the same time it confidently keeps pace with modern changes. Using this experience gained in America, this girl will in the future work at the IQanat Foundation, where she once studied, and will encourage others to be more productive and responsible citizens of the world. We witness people successfully returning home after having participated in an international program, providing positive feedback, and recommending others to participate. The key to a future that is sustainable, one where the generation is educated and has a wider worldview, is giving students these possibilities. My university provided me with the opportunity to study abroad as an exchange student in Lithuania last semester. At the age of 18 years old, I was a young girl who had never left her home country. Sincerely, it was quite challenging to be alone with strangers and away from home. However, over time, these random strangers turned into my closest friends. During my six-month study abroad, in Lithuania, Samantha and I lived in the same room. In a way, Samantha was my sister, or "sorella" in Italian.This second-year Italian master's student helped me adapt to the community at a foreign university and introduced me to other Erasmus students. It was wonderful for me to be acquainted with individuals from Turkey, Korea, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Indonesia, Morocco and India since they all had unique personalities and were a part of their different cultures. I made an attempt to manage my courses so that I could return to my former university with a satisfactory grade. At Kaunas University of Technology, where I spent the whole semester studying, we were taught how to learn more effectively. I found that studying in Europe is relatively simpler than in Kazakhstan , considering the practically identical educational system. For instance, we just took the midterm and final examinations at KTU, which felt more comfortable to me than the midterm, endterm, and final exams we take at my own university. Actually, I had four school courses in total, and they were all very different from one another. As a student of mathematical science speciality, I found learning about physics to be somewhat difficult. Despite this, I was able to pass each subject with honors, and I returned to my Suleyman Demirel university with pleasure. A trip to Copenhagen with my friend Elmira from Kazakhstan and two korean girls is among the memories I will not soon forget. We arrived at 7 a.m. without carefully checking our flight while the flight was scheduled to leave at 10 a.m. When we could not find our flight in the list of flights for the following two hours, we became really anxious. We asked the airport employees, after that we recognized our faults, and made the choice to wait for our flight. In the airport, we fell asleep while hugging our luggage. Nevertheless, we traveled about Copenhagen for two days, enjoying traditional delicacies and seeing the origin of the well-known Copenhagen Tigers store. I am delighted to get the opportunity and fulfill a childhood dream of mine by traveling to the city of love, Paris. Even at first glance, it is obvious that this country is a megalopolis with magnificent historical buildings that gives a completely European atmosphere, which I want to return to. Work and travel is one of the well-known programs that helps students find employment abroad and travel throughout the USA. Every year, this program sends a large number of students to America to pursue their dreams.
