À propos du lieu
À propos du lieu

Tempelhof preserves monumental aviation architecture on medieval Templar land south of central Berlin.

The airfield occupies land once held by the Knights Templar and later cleared for Prussian military drills. Early flight demonstrations by Armand Zipfel and Orville Wright established the ground for civil aviation. Architect Ernst Sagebiel subsequently reshaped the terminal into a monumental curved limestone quadrant evoking an eagle in flight, earning acclaim from Norman Foster as the mother of all airports.

During wartime mobilization, factory teams assembled dive bombers and fighter craft inside the cavernous hangars through underground rail tunnels. Commercial operations ceased amid public controversy, transferring regional flights away from Tempelhof-Schöneberg. Today the site connects directly to city subway routes at Platz der Luftbrücke, leaving vast limestone wings intact beside open airfield grounds.
