The central pyramid on the Giza plateau retains its original casing stones at the peak.

The monument stands as the second largest burial structure on the Giza plateau, constructed for Pharaoh Khafre. Unlike the neighboring tombs, this pyramid retains prominent sections of smooth limestone cladding across its highest levels. Excavations at the associated valley temple complex uncovered a preserved diorite statue of the ruler, confirming royal funerary rites across the adjacent lower causeway.

Early breaches emptied the interior before modern explorers entered through the northern passage. Giovanni Belzoni documented an open granite sarcophagus with a shattered lid inside the burial chamber alongside historic Arabic wall inscriptions. Field workers and researchers must navigate strictly controlled access paths today, as the steep exterior stone faces remain hazardous and climb ascents are lethal.
