Belgian architect Paul Belau designed the complex on the footprint of the old Teatro Tacón, bounded by Calle San Rafael and Calle Consulado. Engineers from Purdy and Henderson executed the construction, incorporating allegorical stone figures by Giuseppe Moretti that represent benevolence, education, music, and theatre.

The complex operates as the permanent home of the Cuban National Ballet and accommodates the biennial International Ballet Festival of Havana. Inside, the main García Lorca Auditorium functions alongside an art gallery, a choral center, video screening rooms, and multiple dedicated rehearsal studios for visiting troupes.
