So, I'm talking to my dad on Skype: - I found your blog on the internet! - .... O_O! (Oh my god! Nervously trying to remember what I got caught for) - I read it all night! - And? How was it? - Very interesting! You write quite well))))) - ...yeah... (BUSTED!!!!) Well, okay, that's not the most important thing!) The most important thing is that the reason I haven't been writing here is this very conversation! I decided that my parents would sleep better if they thought I had a roof over my head, a job, and food) So I had to use the manual method and keep a blog in a notebook, so I could share my emotions and impressions with you later! It's not good to deceive parents, that's why I didn't lie to them) I just kept quiet about it!) My plans for the next 2 weeks: - Richmond, VA - Fredericksburg, VA - Washington, DC - Baltimore, MD - Philadelphia, PA - New York, NY My budget: - $270 I'm traveling with the help of the aforementioned website couchsurfing.org. I've already found people on this site to stay with, two people for each place, just in case I need a backup plan!) Well then, off to new adventures!!!)

We woke up early, at 8, to the alarm, because there's no time to sleep, we need to see everything in NY, it's our last day here. The night was okay, but it wasn't comfortable to sleep, the sofa was too soft and it was cramped ))) but we were so tired that we just passed out as soon as our heads hit the pillow and we didn't care anymore. In the morning we went to the laundry to wash our clothes. Lesha went to work. While we put them in the machine, we went to the beach. There it is... the ocean... blue... clean... but basically the same as the sea) Not many people, probably because it's 10 am. We sunbathed, swam in the ocean, opened the swimming season this year =) waves... ocean... sand almost white... beautiful. We picked up our clothes and went to get ready to walk around. We decided to go see the green lady, meaning the Statue of Liberty, but we were unlucky, we were 10 minutes late, the last boat had left. A bummer. But what can you do. We'll stop by on the way back when we fly to Russia. In 3 months =). We went to pick up Gosha's salary. While waiting for him, we went into an Apple center with Anya to use the Wi-Fi. Wow!!!! It's impressive! Both the center and the laptop itself, convenient, cool, modern, I want one for myself)))) we spent about an hour there. Lesha arrived, we went to Chinatown. Well... we thought it was a big tractor market with a bunch of Chinese people))))) but no, there are Chinese shops there, like Calvin Klein, Levis, etc. Well, naturally, everything is a knockoff. Jeans, hoodies for $12, etc. We went into a Chinese McDonald's – oh, the horror ))) we tried to ask the Chinese guy for a McFlurry, he started explaining in his broken Chinese-English what we should have it with. It was very funny ))) in the end, we had to point with our fingers. The whole store joined in =) Yeah. We chatted, bought it, and left. We didn't buy anything else, mugs - I love NY cost $6, we decided it was expensive and we wouldn't waste money, which we already have little of. We'll buy them later. We went to Brighton Beach - the Russian district. Indeed. A lot of Russians around, you could even say Russia, damn! ))) we saw a cafe – Skovorodka. ))) We ate pizza for $4 with Anya for two. So-so again. The food is gross. I want normal food, but there's nothing! We reached the ocean, people passing by said "Hi" to us =). We spent 15 minutes there, because there was no time, took a couple of photos and went home. It's 8:00 PM, we decided to leave tonight for the state of Virginia to look for work there, Gosha has acquaintances there. We'll hope for that. So there's no time to walk around anymore. At home, we tried to persuade Lesha to go with us, but no, he didn't agree((((((( It was very sad to part with him, he's a good boy. He walked us to the subway, Anya and I had a suitcase each and Gosha had 2 large, heavy suitcases. We had to leave before 12:00 AM because the subway pass was expiring. We left. We got to the Bus Station, bought tickets to Richmond for $69, got on a Greyhound and left. It's 2 AM. We're driving fast, smoothly, the roads are flat, in Russia you can only dream of them =) Gosha said - it's close, about 3 hours... We drove for 7 hours =) he was surprised himself ))) he was wrong. We didn't manage to sleep, just dozed off. Morning - we were driving through the outskirts of Washington, it didn't impress me. No high-rises. The city itself might be better. We saw the White House - aaaaaaa, get the camera out fast!!!!!!!! we took a photo =))) satisfied. Richmond... we arrived... took a taxi... Ashland....

We packed plenty of bananas and donuts for the road (which were somehow stolen from us on the bus—the most interesting part is: why donuts specifically??) along with clean water. The trip to NY would have been fine if not for that two-to-three-hour layover in Richmond. On the way to Myrtle, it was easy to remember because it was early morning and we were well-rested. But this one was in the middle of the night, and we, used to snuggling in our beds at that time, were standing (because there was nowhere to sit) at the boarding gate. Manually carrying all the stuff we’d accumulated over the summer during moments like that felt like a huge ordeal. The multi-kilometer arrival in NY is felt back in New Jersey, when the tiny bus with a skinny cheetah logo weaves between massive dump trucks. I, like a madwoman, miraculously snapped a photo of that NY landscape in the gray-blue haze through a row of heads sitting on the bus (it's just a pity I couldn't capture the spire of the Empire State Building). I was in a fever! It was exactly how I imagined it! Still so new and mysterious, but already so close... The Lincoln Tunnel, which we had to pass through to get to the main Greyhound station in the country, seemed too long to me. And then, we stepped out into the pitch darkness onto the ground of NYC (in the dark because the bus from Myrtle arrives on the second basement level). We made our way out into the light of day. It was about 7 a.m. We dropped off all our unnecessary things at storage, strapped on our backpacks, and stepped out into the big, unknown world... The noise, the hum of cars, the sea of people, and the surprisingly light and fresh air instantly penetrated us and carried us along the streets like waves. I won't even describe my feelings; it's obvious. I was amazed that no one pushed or trampled two people staring wide-eyed at everything (no comparison to Moscow, naturally!), we were completely safe, and the new, huge world turned out to be kind and welcoming. Our feet walked on their own, turning wherever they wanted, and they wanted to go straight to the Empire State Building. I recognized it immediately from that silhouette I snapped on the bus. We were soaking up everything around us, and besides the impressions, I was mechanically soaking up portion after portion from every Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's, and Burger King... iced coffee, Iced Mocha, which I would be consuming all the way to Philadelphia. And so, we wandered unnoticed for about eight hours until we realized we needed to take the full tour on the little red open-top buses for $70. We bought tickets on the street from a dark-skinned gentleman who explained everything about the routes to us in about 5 minutes, where to get off to gawk at the sights we were interested in, and said that the ticket included all possible excursions, including the ascent to the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

Now the problems with these buses are starting. So, I'm sitting in Richmond, they announce our bus, I walk up to the doors, but just as we're about to leave, they tell us to take our things off the bus because we have a transfer to another one. I grabbed my stuff and went back into the station. They announced that the trip would only be in 2 hours, so what can you do, we waited for 2 hours. We started talking to some Americans; many said they had been on the bus for 4 days coming from Las Vegas. Two hours passed, and they told us to wait another half hour. Finally, boarding started, and they told us we were going to Washington. Everyone was surprised because we were supposed to go to Baltimore and then New York, but oh well, we went. A child was crying the whole way; many were already at their limit, 4 hours of non-stop screaming.

For example, would you understand something like "ge nama na"? That means "Gate number nine," and there are a bunch of other examples.
