Sobre el lugar

The Lateran Palace was the primary seat of papal governance before the court moved to the Vatican.

The site originated as the private estate of the Plautii Laterani family during the early Roman Empire. Following accusations of conspiracy against Nero, the imperial administration seized the grounds. Emperor Constantine later took ownership through his marriage to Fausta, cleared the adjacent military horse-guards barracks, and transferred the property to the Bishop of Rome to host episcopal councils and house the papacy.

Pope Hadrian expanded the complex with a residential tower and an entrance portico designated for distributing alms. Pope Leo subsequently commissioned ceremonial banqueting halls decorated with political mosaics to assert temporal and spiritual authority. For long-term residents, the neighborhood pairs ordinary apartment blocks with security closures and crowded transit links during major ecclesiastical assemblies.
