Sobre el lugar

The Panthéon crowns the Latin Quarter as a monument that shifted from a royal church to a secular mausoleum.

Commissioned by the French crown on the site of an ancient Roman forum and an early Frankish basilica, the monument was planned as an abbey church dedicated to Saint Genevieve. Architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot gave the structure a Greek cross floor plan and a classical portico modeled on antiquity. The design united classical Roman proportions with vaulted stone ceilings and a monumental dome overlooking the Left Bank.

To support the massive weight of the triple stone dome, Soufflot integrated an innovative system of hidden iron rods directly into the masonry. Construction finished under his collaborator Jean-Baptiste Rondelet during the political upheaval of the French Revolution. The new revolutionary government transformed the church into a secular temple, dedicating the subterranean crypt to interring distinguished citizens of the nation.
