Researchers working on European book trade history divide their weeks between the municipal library collections and the printing archives at Hôtel de la Couronne.
Master printer Maurice Audin and book historian Henri-Jean Martin established the institution to protect the municipal graphic legacy. The collection occupies Hôtel de la Couronne on rue de la Poulaillerie, a mansion that formerly hosted assemblies of the city aldermen. Donated to the municipality by the LCL banking corporation, the site preserves original printing presses and typographic archives within historic administrative halls.
Galleries display works by early Lyon printers including Martin Husz, Sébastien Gryphe, and Etienne Dolet alongside European masterworks by Aldus Manutius and Christopher Plantin. Beyond early movable type, exhibits feature modern developments such as the Lumitype-Photon phototypesetter and the BBR computer typesetting system. Bilingual French and English exhibition panels guide visitors through each stage of technical production.
